YMCA transitional housing

Project Overview

Ellis Hillman Architects were appointed by the YMCA to design a transitional housing development, consisting of 46 apartments (31sq.m each) located adjacent to the existing YMCA North Staffordshire campus. This development is designed not to provide permanent, long-term homes, but rather to offer secure, supportive accommodation that serves as a “stepping stone” for young people. The goal of the transitional housing is to help residents build the necessary skills and experience to successfully hold a tenancy, with typical tenancy duration of 1-2 years. The ultimate aim is to enable young people to transition into the private rented sector or eventually achieve home ownership.

The design of the accommodation is centred around a secure courtyard/amenity space, providing a sense of community and safety for the residents. The layout of the building responds to the existing urban context, with building massing positioned along Hardings Road and Grace Crescent to blend seamlessly with the surrounding area. The scale of the building has been carefully considered in relation to the surrounding mix of residential properties and YMCA accommodation, which range from two to four storeys. This ensures that the new development complements the existing urban fabric while maintaining an appropriate relationship with its surroundings.

The choice of materials for the transitional housing development was also made with the local context in mind. The materials selected reflect the existing buildings in the area, including the nearby terraced houses, the YMCA building on the opposite side of Grace Crescent, and the Headquarters at Edinburgh House. This thoughtful approach to design ensures that the development integrates smoothly into the local environment while providing a modern and supportive living space for the young people it serves.

The YMCA transitional housing project is an important step in providing the youth of North Staffordshire with the opportunity to transition into independent living, offering a secure environment in which they can grow and prepare for the next chapter in their lives.
