Project Overview

Ellis Hillman Architects were appointed to provide full architectural services for this affordable housing redevelopment in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The site, a derelict former workingmen’s club, was purchased by a local Housing Society. The development includes four semi-detached two-bedroom houses and four one-bedroom apartments.

When designing affordable housing, it’s crucial to prioritize efficient use of space, natural light, and well-designed common areas. These elements can have a profound impact on residents’ mental well-being and their sense of connection to their neighbours. Good design can make even the smallest spaces feel expansive and inviting, encouraging healthier lifestyles and stronger community bonds.

Moreover, incorporating sustainable building practices and energy-efficient solutions into affordable housing projects can provide long-term cost savings for residents while reducing the environmental footprint of the development. By integrating smart design with practical functionality, we not only ensure that these homes meet the immediate needs of the community but also lay the foundation for long-term resilience.

In the end, affordable housing must reflect the values of respect, equity, and opportunity. The impact of well-designed affordable housing extends beyond its physical structure—it enhances the lives of its residents, creates stronger communities, and contributes to the social and economic vitality of the area. Quality design is a vital tool for shaping the future of affordable housing and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their background or income, have access to homes that truly improve their lives.

Designed to blend into the recently re-developed area with a mix of Red and Charcoal bricks with different laying patterns and spandrel panels below the windows to break up the façade.

Architects Statement

As an architect and designer of affordable housing, we strongly believe that quality design is not just a luxury—it’s an essential component of creating thriving, sustainable communities. Affordable housing should be more than a place to live; it should foster a sense of dignity, belonging, and pride for its residents. Thoughtful, high-quality design can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals and families, regardless of their income.
