Ellis Hillman Architects were appointed to create a bespoke designed cottage on a garden plot of a former vicarage in the picturesque village of Haslington, Cheshire East, located near Crewe. The spacious garden offered the opportunity to subdivide the site, creating a generous plot for a single dwelling while still preserving ample garden space for the existing vicarage. This thoughtful design approach ensured the new home would complement the surrounding environment while allowing for privacy and ample outdoor space for both residences.
Access to the new plot was via a long, block-paved driveway running alongside the vicarage, providing a discreet approach to the site. The driveway led to a large parking area, the proposed house, and a detached triple-bay garage, designed to match the cottage’s aesthetic. This arrangement ensured that the house had sufficient parking space while also maintaining the aesthetic harmony of the overall site.
Our clients, who had lived in the former vicarage, were familiar with the dynamics of the garden and the way sunlight shifted throughout the day. As a result, the bespoke designed cottage was carefully orientated to make the most of natural daylight. The house was positioned to ensure optimal exposure to sunlight, while also considering the movement of shadows across the property, thereby enhancing the living experience throughout the day.
The design of the cottage is traditional in style, incorporating reclaimed facing bricks and a tiled roof with scalloped detailing that gives the building a sense of history and character. Weathered timber cladding further adds to the cottage’s rustic charm. Inside, oak-framed double-glazed casement windows and doors are complemented by oak features throughout, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that resonates with natural materials and craftsmanship.
This combination of traditional materials with modern design principles has resulted in a timeless, comfortable home that perfectly suits its setting in Haslington.
We used the services of Richard Evans at Ellis Hillman Architects to design a four bed detached house. Richard listened to our wish list, budget and timescale and quickly and thoughtfully produced a design. He advised us on the best positioning, how to consider energy saving, flow through and round the house and the use of a combination of traditional and modern materials and systems.
The price quoted for their services were honoured even through meetings, phone calls and messages that were required to develop a design. Richard dealt with the process of outline and full planning and problems that arose from environmental and conservation issues from the Council.
All dealings with both Richard Evans and Ellis Hillman Architects were very professional.
Our clients had a clear vision of what they wanted from their new home, and we were delighted to deliver a scheme that brought their vision to fruition.
