Our client purchased a plot of land with an existing house and approached Ellis Hillman architects to submit an application for a new build, replacement sustainable home for their family in Alsager, Staffordshire.
The existing dwelling was considerably smaller than the houses on the surrounding plots and we successfully managed to get approval for a house with a sizeable increase in footprint.
Our client, an electrician by trade, had extensively researched modern and alternative methods of construction (timber frame, steel frame, SIPS panels), finally settling on Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF).
We are familiar with ICF construction, having completed another ICF house in Loggerheads.
ICF is an in-situ modern method of construction (MMC) that consists of blocks, made from an insulating material, which combined with concrete, can deliver excellent performance in terms of air tightness, thermal mass, reducing thermal bridging and creating a comfortable living environment that can retain heat during the winter and remain cool during the summer.
Our client has largely self-built his home, which has a been a labour of love, but he and his family couldn’t be happier with the result that delivers all of their needs as a family both now and in the future.
The home is almost completely open plan at ground floor with large opening to the rear that connects with the large rear garden.
Upstairs the roof construction has been created with vaulted spaces to all the rooms.
Although the project is not quite finished, you can see from the photos the quality of the internal space that has been created.
Progress photos showing how this project developed over time can be seen by heading over to our journal section here.
Thank you to Ellis Hillman and in particular Richard, who has been a constant source of help and support throughout our new house build. Richard really took the time to get to know us and understand what we wanted from our new family home. He gave us a first draft design that we loved immediately. It managed to include everything on our wish list, and more; as well as future proofing the property. We came across many hurdles through the planning and building stage and Richard was always there at the end of the phone to advise, guide and support. We really felt like Richard was invested in our build, and no question was too small or too much trouble. We are delighted with our new home and would certainly recommend Ellis Hillman to our family and friends.
EHA have designed several ICF houses now so are very familiar with their construction and unique requirements. Our client now has a family home that he should be very proud of.
