Project Overview

This contemporary housing development in the pretty village of Glapthorn consists of four high quality, new build residential homes. The houses were built utilising traditional construction methods, to reflect the surrounding environment and promote sustainability.

Our client purchased a terraced cottage which additionally included a large garden, formally a garden allotment, that had become redundant.  A feasibility study concluded that the site could accommodate two large detached houses and a pair of semi-detached houses. Many of the houses in the village of Glapthorn are traditionally constructed using the local Stamford Stone and, therefore, it is especially important these houses were thoughtfully designed to fit seamlessly into the surrounding environment.

The rural style and vernacular of the village is well established. We sought to design homes that echo this aesthetic, by sticking to traditional construction methods that seek to preserve and enhance the village’s charm and character. The homes were designed in local Stamford Stone, with a mixture of slate roof to the homes and red pantiles to garages. This reflects the local mixture of materials used on houses and outbuildings.

The houses were built to a high thermal standard that incorporates timber frame construction, heat recovery ventilation and air sourced heat pumps which, as they rely on renewable energy, contribute to reducing carbon emissions and are a more sustainable choice for heating and cooling. You can find out more about air sourced heat pumps here.

The site was put forward for development as part of the East Northamptonshire District Council local plan review and a planning application was submitted and eventually approved.  This housing development was completed in late 2019 and has achieved its mission to integrate harmoniously with the existing environment of Glapthorn.
