St John the Evangelist exterior view

Project Overview

Following the devastating fire in 2022, Ellis Hillman Architects was appointed as the lead architectural firm to oversee the restoration and reordering project at St. John the Evangelist Church in Trent Vale. From the outset, the focus has been on a collaborative and inclusive approach, working closely with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure the project not only meets the immediate needs of the church but also respects its history and heritage.

The initial step was engaging with the Parochial Church Council (PCC) and the congregation to produce a comprehensive project brief, which laid the groundwork for the design. Extensive consultations with the PCC helped outline the desired outcomes for the project, emphasising the need for a flexible, accessible space that would accommodate both worship and community activities. The congregation’s input was vital, as it provided valuable insights into the evolving nature of worship and the congregation’s diverse needs, from accessibility to the desire for modern facilities.

Equally important was our work with the Diocese Advisory Committee (DAC), which ensured that the project adhered to ecclesiastical requirements and guidelines. We also collaborated closely with Historic England and The Victorian Society, given the building’s heritage significance. The involvement of the conservation officer and the planning department was crucial to ensure that any alterations to the structure and internal spaces were in line with preservation standards while meeting modern requirements.

Together, we navigated the complexities of restoring a historic building while addressing the urgent needs for contemporary facilities. Through detailed feasibility designs and regular consultations, we successfully gained approval for the project, balancing the preservation of the church’s character with the requirements for a functional, accessible, and inclusive space that supports the congregation’s spiritual and community life. This collaborative effort was fundamental in creating a solution that respects both the church’s rich heritage and its future needs.
