Project Overview

In 2011, Ellis Hillman Architects were appointed to design a new church annexe for St. Peter’s Church in the pretty village of Forsbrook in Stoke-on-Trent. The primary aim was to provide modern facilities without altering the integrity of the building. The annex was intended to provide much-needed toilet facilities and office accommodation for staff and visitors, while respecting the church’s historical context.

St. Peter’s Church in Blythe Bridge is a charming example of Early English Gothic architecture, constructed in 1849 using locally sourced stone from Hollington. Built by the renowned architects James and Edward Barr of Putney, the church features prominent lancet windows, a bell cote, and a highly substantial structure. Although the building is not listed, it holds significant historical value.

Nikolaus Pevsner, in his ‘Buildings of England’ series, mentions the church briefly, but local sources offer a more detailed description. The church was originally consecrated in 1849 and was designed to provide a space for worship that reflected the Early English Gothic style with a well-developed chancel, nave, and notable lancet windows. The church underwent several changes over the years, including the addition of the North Aisle in 1912, which led to a repositioning of the entrance. Later renovations also moved the font and added the current porch.

The design of the annex was handled with great sensitivity, ensuring it would blend seamlessly with the existing structure. Constructed in stone to match the original building, the annex complements the church’s design and maintains its visual appeal. The project was completed in 2012, and the new facilities provide a functional solution to the church’s needs while preserving the charm and character of the heritage building.

This thoughtful and respectful addition enhances the church’s usability while maintaining the integrity of its history, benefiting the congregation as well as the broader community.
