Project Overview

As the appointed architects for The Randlay Care Home in Shropshire, Ellis Hillman Architects were engaged at RIBA Stage 04 (Technical Design) to develop detailed construction drawings, achieve building regulation approval, and provide on-site technical support and guidance to Sandycroft Construction. Our role was to ensure that all design elements were fully developed to a level suitable for construction. We also worked diligently to address the technical requirements of the project, ensuring that the design was not only feasible but also met all functional and operational needs, while still preserving the core design intent.

Working under the JCT Design and Build contract, we collaborated closely with Sandycroft Construction to meet all compliance and regulatory requirements. This included the preparation of comprehensive technical documentation to address critical aspects of the project, such as structural, mechanical, and electrical systems. Our team coordinated with other consultants, including structural engineers and M&E consultants, to ensure that all elements of the design were effectively integrated and aligned with the construction requirements. We also managed the process of liaising with the local authority to obtain the necessary building regulation approvals, ensuring the design complied with all statutory requirements for safety, accessibility, and environmental standards.

Throughout the construction phase, our team remained actively involved by providing ongoing technical support. This involved responding to site queries, offering technical advice on design implementation, and resolving any issues that arose during the build process. We worked alongside Sandycroft Construction to ensure that the project was delivered on schedule, within budget, and to the required quality standards. This collaborative approach helped mitigate potential challenges and ensured a smooth transition from design to completion.

By maintaining a clear focus on technical accuracy and collaboration, we ensured that The Maples Care Home was constructed to meet the high standards expected by the client, delivering a safe, efficient, and functional care environment that satisfied both design objectives and regulatory criteria.

Sandycroft have worked with Ellis Hillman for many years now both with them either in the capacity as lead consultant on traditionally procured projects or as our appointed architect on design and build schemes.  The team at Ellis Hillman have always been great to work with being responsive, diligent, attentive and skilled in their profession.  They have an eye on cost, creating schemes that meet the demands of the Client both in terms of aesthetics and value for money.  We will continue to use the services of Ellis Hillman going forward and wish them continued success.
