Ellis Hillman Architects were commissioned to undertake a full refurbishment and extension of an existing building to accommodate the new Head Office for Novus Property Solutions Ltd in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The design approach sought to create a distinctive and functional workspace while reflecting both the company’s legacy and its strong ties to the local context. This was achieved through a thoughtful integration of brand identity and regional history, transforming the building into a contemporary and dynamic environment.
The design concept focused on merging modern architectural principles with elements that celebrate Novus’s heritage and its role within the community. Historic imagery of Stoke-on-Trent, carefully selected to represent key moments in the company’s and the area’s development, was printed on large vinyl panels that adorn the walls of the building. A curved feature wall was introduced to highlight the company’s timeline, showcasing important events, milestones, and achievements throughout its history.
A key aspect of the project was the creation of a new entrance extension, which serves as both a welcoming focal point and a secure, controlled access to the rest of the office spaces. The extension’s design is both functional and symbolic, reinforcing the company’s professional image while offering a clear identity that is easily recognisable from the car park. The reception area, as well as the surrounding office spaces, were finished to an exceptional standard, reflecting the company’s commitment to quality and attention to detail. The use of rich materials, innovative textures, and a strategic colour palette that incorporates Novus’s corporate identity ensures the space is both sophisticated and inviting.
Internally, the building offers a diverse range of workspaces, including open-plan offices, executive offices, and a variety of meeting rooms. Generous communal and breakout areas are strategically located to foster collaboration and provide staff with areas for informal interaction and relaxation. These spaces are designed to encourage a sense of community and well-being, aligning with the company’s values of collaboration and employee satisfaction.
The architectural design of the Novus Head Office strikes a balance between functionality, aesthetic appeal, and brand integration. The cohesive use of materials, colour schemes, and signage ensures a seamless and professional environment that speaks to the company’s ethos, while the inclusion of historic references offers a tangible connection to the local context and company legacy. This project exemplifies how architecture can elevate an organisation’s identity while creating a high-performance work environment.
Working on the Novus Head Office project was a truly rewarding experience, as it allowed us to blend innovative design with the company’s rich history and strong local ties. It was inspiring to create a space that not only reflects Novus’s values but also fosters a sense of pride and connection for everyone who works there.
