Project Overview

Ellis Hillman Architects were delighted to have been appointed to design a new visitor centre, covered riding area and associated works at the Cannock Chase Trekking Centre in Staffordshire. The Cannock Chase Trekking Centre is a unique destination offering horse trekking experiences in the beautiful Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The centre allows visitors to explore the landscape on horseback while providing essential facilities for guests, including spaces for preparation, relaxation, and services.

Ellis Hillman Architects were excited to contribute to this project by designing a functional, welcoming space that enhances the overall visitor experience. The centre’s facilities include a large barn-style building, designed to provide ample space for the centre’s operations while also offering comfort for visitors. The barn design was selected because it is a common built from in the area and also for its practicality, creating a spacious environment that allows for clear circulation and efficient use of space. The building houses areas for guest services, such as a reception, changing rooms, and a small shop where visitors can purchase trekking gear or other essentials.

A key focus of the design was to create a space that felt connected to its natural surroundings while remaining functional and practical. The barn-style structure uses natural materials, including timber cladding, to reflect the rural setting without overwhelming the landscape. The building is designed to accommodate the needs of visitors and staff, with practical spaces for preparation before and after treks. The reception area is welcoming and easily accessible, while the changing rooms and additional facilities provide comfort for guests. The design also considers the flow of movement within the building, ensuring that users can easily access all areas of the centre with minimal disruption to operations.

Working on the Cannock Chase Trekking Centre allowed us to create a space that balances practicality and comfort while being sensitive to its natural context. The building provides essential services in a way that enhances the overall experience for visitors, ensuring they have a seamless and enjoyable time at the centre.
